Neighborhood Residents Join Forces for Safer Streets

TNDC rejoiced this year as the number of Safe Havens in the Tenderloin neighborhood doubled to 40. The Safe Haven Coalition — a partnership between TNDC, Community Housing Partnership, and resident volunteers — strives to create an involved network of community support by encouraging local business and organizations to open their doors as “Safe Havens” to people who feel endangered on the streets.

“Safe Havens are a part of a broader effort to encourage grassroots community participation in making this neighborhood a safer place to live,” said Steve Woo, TNDC Community Organizer. MORE

TNDC’s Community Organizing Department works hard to mobilize Tenderloin residents around issues that affect the neighborhood. Last November, it helped to rally nearly 550 first-time voters in a series of neighborhood Get Out the Vote campaigns, according to data collected by the Department of Elections. As it approaches its third year, TNDC’s Community Organizing Department continues to grow and develop to meet the needs of a changing community. MORE

TNDC holds two-day Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) training sessions on an annual basis, hosted by the San Francisco Fire Department and designed to educate average citizens to be prepared to assist in the case of a major emergency.  75 members of TNDC’s staff have now been certified to respond effectively and in an organized manner, should a major disaster affect our Tenderloin neighborhood. Another session is planned for January.

Tenderloin is one of the densest and most diverse neighborhoods in America, and TNDC’s tenant population reflects this eclectic mix of nationalities and cultures.  Nowhere was this more evident than the “TNDC's Got Talent” tenant talent show, at which residents from TNDC buildings all across the Tenderloin and surrounding neighborhoods gathered to showcase their talents for friends and neighbors.
