In Solidarity with the Asian American Community
Dated 2.17.2021
Dear Friends of TNDC,
In the last week we've seen a series of attacks against the Asian community in the Bay Area, highlighting a pattern of anti-Asian racism and violence since Covid began. The solidarity across race, nationality, and age rising out of these tragedies is inspiring and necessary. As we continue celebrating Lunar New Year and Black History Month, we take a moment to reflect on our shared fight for building racial and economic equity and the importance of solidarity, community engagement, and collaboration.
In this spirit and in solidarity with our Asian American tenants, community members, staff, supporters, neighbors, loved ones, and fellow community organizations, we have signed onto a statement calling for a response that addresses the root causes of racial violence instead of relying on criminalization and retribution.
We highlight and reinforce the message shared in the statement from Asian American Organizations Across the Bay Area: “As organizations with a long history of protecting and advancing the rights of communities of color, we know that an over-reliance on law enforcement approaches has largely been ineffective and has been disproportionately harmful to Black communities and other communities of color. We believe the solution to violence is to empower our communities with resources, support, and education — this is how we make all of our communities safe.”
