Our Work

Building a Better, More Equitable Future

We believe that everyone deserves to thrive. Whether that means being able to raise a family, feel healthier, grow a career, fight for justice, or live in a stable home. But right now, the systems we all rely on are designed to create enormous barriers for people based on their income, race, spoken language, gender identity, and more.

Our work across Homes, Health, and Voice aims to change that. By building more homes, helping tenants stay stably housed with the support of social work and cost savings through sustainability efforts, supporting physical and mental health through Health & Wellness programming, providing resources the Tenderloin community asks for like an after-school program and nutritious foods at corner stores, investing in local leadership, and supporting policy change.

Everyone deserves the basic human needs of Homes, Health, and Voice. Only together, can we make lasting equitable change and help more people live, grow, and thrive.

Living in an Supportive Home

Hear from tenants Sasha Howard, Siu Kwan Man Mui, Theresa Smith, and Ms. Shao Fong Liu describing their personal experience living in TNDC housing. TNDC staff share more about their work and values in serving the unique communities in each TNDC building.

Our Homes

Over 6,300 people live in our homes—families raising the next generation, seniors building their strength with Tai Chi, adults growing their career, and community members fighting for justice. People who want to live and thrive, but face enormous systemic obstacles to their basic human needs due to their income, race, spoken language, gender identity, and more.

TL After-School Program (TASP)

TASP is a place where over 230 kids and teens play, learn, build leadership skills, celebrate different cultures, and explore San Francisco and opportunities for their future. The only program of its kind in the Tenderloin, TASP often sees the same participants from ages 7 to 18 and later welcomes them back as employed staff.

Urban Agriculture

By building rooftop gardens and larger community gardens like the TNDC Tenderloin People's Garden and Webster Street People's Garden, the Urban Agriculture team is changing the food system from the ground up. Each garden provides a free fresh produce to building tenants or community members as well as a place for relaxation and connection.

Food & Nutrition

The Food & Nutrition Focus Area recognizes that food access, paired with nutrition education and food demonstrations, play a role into a community’s health and wellbeing.

We want to foster a society where our older adults, who are living in community dwelling settings, can live safe, healthy, and independent lives.

Healthy Corner Store Coalition (HCSC)

The HCSC is a movement to increase the options of healthy foods and produce in the Tenderloin and Bayview by investing in community members passionate about food justice and building relationships with local corner stores. The HCSC is known for its work with numerous partners to redesign corner stores to prioritize produce and healthier options.

What We're Reading

Much of our Food & Wellness work centers around the idea of food as medicine. We are working on innovative ways to encourage our neighbors to learn about healthy food and take their health journey into their own hands.

Volunteer in the TNDC Tenderloin People’s Garden

Every week there are opportunities to volunteer in our community garden on the corner of Larkin and McAllister Street! Help us grow and harvest fresh produce that goes back to the community at no cost.
