Through the Better Buildings Challenge, TNDC exceeded the 20% in 10 years reduction in water use goal and achieved 27% in only 5 years. Through water conservation measures, TNDC was able to save 24,751,506 gallons (ca. 93,695 cubic meters) of water and $772,000 in water bill savings in 2024. This is enough water to give everyone who lives in the Tenderloin neighborhood drinking water for 2.5 years.
"Water is life! This is a reminder that sustainability should not be considered optional but should be a priority for organizations everywhere,” Magda Szymanska, Associate Director of Sustainability, said.
TNDC invested in low-flow, water-efficient indoor fixtures, such as toilets that use only 0.8 gallons (ca. 3 liters) per flush. This marks the second time in a row reaching the 10-year water savings goal in just 5 years, with cumulative savings of 48%.
"In a place like California, where the state is constantly in a drought, water savings make a huge impact," Karina Takemoto, Assistant Sustainability Program Manager added. "TNDC is working to responsibly manage our natural resources, mitigate climate change, and improve the quality of life for our tenants.”
According to Szymanska, TNDC will shift focus to decarbonization via electrification. TNDC continues to work toward energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals and has another 5 years to achieve them.
